David Kocan

New Managing Director joins CUSLI


David Kocan joins Canada-U.S. Law Institute as Managing Director. Mr. Kocan is also a Visiting Assistant Professor of Law at Case Western on a three-year appointment. He earned his J.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Law, where he was Editor-in-Chief of theJournal of International Lawand a member of the Case Western Niagara International Moot Court Team. He has served in the U.S. Peace Corps and as a webmaster for a major e-commerce firm.

How Can We Achieve Energy Security?

Celebrating its 35th anniversary year, the Canada-U.S. Law Institute presented a timely annual conference, “Energy Security and Climate Change: A Canada-U.S. Common Approach?” The event, which took place April 14-16, 2011, featured a keynote by David Jacobson (left), U.S. Ambassador to Canada. During the conference, 34 experts, including Canadian and U.S. policymakers, professionals from the energy industry, legal practitioners, and academics, examined the topic from many perspectives. The conference was attended by 143 attorneys, students and professors from the U.S. and Canada, and the public. Executive Committee co-chairs Hon. James J. Blanchard, Partner, DLA Piper, and former U.S. Ambassador to Canada, and Hon. James S. Peterson, P.C., Counsel, Fasken Martineau, and former Canadian federal Minister and Secretary of State, delivered the opening remarks. Event co-chairs Chris Sands, Hudson Institute, and Canadian Journalist David Crane offered analysis of the proceedings at the conclusion. CUSLI is grateful to this year's generous sponsors.

Windsor Law wins 2011 Niagara Moot

CUSLI presented the 43rd annual Niagara international Moot Court Competition, "Case Concerning Arctic Waters," in Toronto, Canada, February 24-26, 2011. Eighteen teams from the U.S. and Canada competed. The University of Windsor Faculty of Law was the Niagara Cup Champion, while Seattle University was the Runner-Up. Upcoming Events

2012 Niagara International Moot Court - The 2012 Niagara International Law Moot Court Competition will be held in Washington, DC, February 23-25, 2012. This year's problem concerns humanitarian intervention after a natural disaster under the Responsibility to Protect Doctrine, and corporate liability for involvement in atrocity crimes. 2012 Henry T. King, Jr. Annual Conference on Canada-U.S. Relations - CUSLI will present its annual conference March 23-24, 2012 in Cleveland, Ohio. The CUSLI Executive Committee is meeting in Toronto on August 12 to finalize the 2012 Conference topic and panels, which will be announced shortly thereafter on the CUSLI website.
