The Henry T. King, Jr. Award
2010 Honoree
Hon. George V. Voinovich, United States Senator (R-Ohio)
The Canada-United States Law Institute, a bi-national entity jointly operated by Case Western Reserve University School of Law (Cleveland, Ohio) and The University of Western Ontario Faculty of Law (London, Ontario), established the Henry T. King, Jr. Award in 2009 to recognize those individuals and entities that capture the spirit of Henry King, a lifetime advocate for Canada-US relations, the rule of law, and public service. The inaugural recipient was the International Joint Commission in commemoration of that institution’s century long efforts in promoting bi-national cooperation, consultation and action.
The 2010 Honoree, United States Senator George V. Voinovich, has dedicated more than four decades to public service. A life-long Ohioan, Senator Voinovich has served the people of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, and Ohio as Auditor and Commissioner, Mayor of Cleveland, member of the Ohio House of Representatives, Lieutenant Governor, and a two-term Governor. In 1998, the citizens of Ohio elected him to the United States Senate upon the retirement of Senator John Glenn. Senator Voinovich presently serves as an influential member of the Senate Appropriations, Homeland Security, and Environment & Public Works Committees.
During his tenure in elected office, Senator Voinovich has been a tireless champion for Canada-US relations, the Great Lakes, and manufacturing in the Great Lakes region. He currently serves as the co-Chair of the Senate Great Lakes Task Force. He introduced the Great Lakes Legacy Act of 2008 to clean up contaminated areas of the Great Lakes. The Senator also opposed the operation of the Devil’s Lake outlet. He has been a strong proponent for strengthening homeland security while balancing economic interests as evidenced by his work in providing a sensible solution for the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. Senator Voinovich has been steadfast in his support for Canada-US trade. Of greatest significance, the Senator believes in dialogue and discussion, and in furtherance of that principle, has been a longstanding member of the Canada-United States Inter-parliamentary Group.
